Kate McLean is very refreshing. She believes that graphic design shouldn’t only rely on the visual, but also on the other sense we received as humans. Especially our smell is a central theme in her work. Right now she is working on a project which investigates the smell perceptions of the city environment. Her findings are displayed in a variety of artistic, cartographic forms and augmenting and altering the maps on the basis of audience response. She tries to change landscapes into smellscapes. What I think is special about her way of working is that she is doing something completely new on a very large scale. She is challenging our ways of communication. She is seeking for an alternative way of how to create ambiance. Not by looking at something, but by smelling.
